A Poetics of Translation

In this presentation I will discuss my use of translation to develop a theory of embodied poetic practice in relation to systems of language, communication and community. The instability of the term translation – its status as both a product and a process, as well as its deployment as a metaphor for transitions between forms or mediums – is utilized to explore the construction and deconstruction of subjects and objects in language. At the same time, the more self-evident notion of translation as the transfer of information from one (unified) language to another frames an exploration of the role of translation in terms of community and the relational. Using examples of work of the Japanese poet Kitasono Katue and the Brazilian artist Lygia Clark to examine the ‘concrete’ art movements of the late 1950s and early 1960s, I will show how an embodied poetic practice might provide an alternative mode of address that questions the multi-lingual model of translation from the position of ‘subjects in transit.’
I will also present work from my project ‘Bodies of Work’ which centres on the circulation and exchange of language and forms between works produced in a variety of mediums. This project centres on using performances as staged trials of theoretical ideas which in turn produce materials which are used in the following stage of the project.
